Biennale sztuki VIA CARPATIA 2021

Already too much has happened
that was not supposed to happen.
What was to come about
has not.

Wisława Szymborska, translation: Joanna Trzeciak, from the poem Turn of the century

Już zbyt wiele się stało, co się stać nie miało,
a to, co miało nadejść, nie nadeszło.

Wisława Szymborska, fragment wiersza Schyłek wieku

FAQ

A single artist or an entire artistic group can submit a work to the contest. Any applicant (in an entire group) must meet all of the criteria mentioned below:

– must be an adult up to the age of 40 (born in 1981 and later),

– must be an art school graduate (minimum level: bachelor), or a member of registered national and international artist associations,

– must be associated with areas defined as a VIA carpatia AREA, i.e. countries such as: Lithuania, Serbia, Kosovo, North Macedonia; the selected regions of: Lithuania, Russia, Belarus, Poland, Ukraine, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece (please see the details on the map – attachment no. 2 to the terms and conditions); excluding the capital cities of these countries due to their international nature and easier access to artistic promotion. An applicant’s nationality does not matter.

When verifying that this criterion has been met, we check whether or not an Artist’s residence address provided in the APPLICATION FORM is located within the area indicated by us. The terms and conditions of the biennale indicates that the contest is addressed only to the artists of any nationality who were born, who live, or create and live, and feel, very attached to the regions defined as the VIA CARPATIA region, and who have been specified in attachment no. 2 to the terms and conditions (VIA CARPATIA_area).

Any works within the field of visual arts, this including digital and interdisciplinary works, can be submitted, e.g. those combining sound and object. A single artist/group may submit a maximum of 3 works, and each of the works can be completed by using a different technique.

A work does not have to be inspired by Wisława Szymborska’s words. However, the application form should include a justification of the relation of the submitted work and the words of Wisława Szymborska which are this year’s biennale’s motto (this should be kept short – a text of 160 characters maximum). (please see attachment no. 1 to the terms and conditions).

The work which will receive a prize or a distinction becomes the property of the Organizer, and it will be returned to the Author. The work which receives the Grand Prix of the Biennale – PLN 15,000 (gross) – will become the property of the Organizer. In the case of non-statutory prizes, but only if the prize amounts to PLN 15,000 (gross) and more, the awarded work becomes the property of the founder of the award.

The prize in the amount of PLN 250 gross will be given to each Author of a work qualified for the 2nd stage of the contest upon delivery of the work to the Organizer within the statutory deadline (this being November 22nd, 2021). If an Author submits more works, they may receive the above-mentioned prize for each of the work which is qualified for the 2nd stage of the competition. This prize is support for the Artist in the costs which they have incurred to deliver their work to the exhibition, and thus, support in their participation in the contest.

The contest applications should only be made via the electronic application form, available in Polish and English.

You can submit any questions related to the contest to the following e-mail address: viacarpatia@imogaleria.pl, tel. +48-18-446-18-58.

The winners will be announced publicly on December 3rd, 2021, during the opening ceremony of the post-contest exhibition.
